Project summary
The OCTOPUS project aims to stress edge nodes infrastructures for locally produced content in the TV broadcasting market. Indeed, the idea is that some content coming from local users (not necessary journalists) can be consumed and eventually enriched (via Augmented Reality) and then proposed to the content consumers.
The typical use case is a live event where anybody can send an audio/video stream to the OCTOPUS control system (which should be controlled locally in the mobile production unit). Thus, the operator from the broadcaster can select in real time which content will be used or discarded and in case augment the content via other tools. It must be highlighted that the content is produced in real time in a very high volume thanks to the local users and it can be also consumed locally or remotely via classical broadcasting systems (i.e. digital broadcasting).
The concept can be applied to huge concerts or sport events as well as small local events such as fairs or religious events (which are pretty common in Italy) mostly in the outdoor environment.
One of the most useful functions that will be implemented and tested within the OCTOPUS project is the possibility to send out-of-band information to journalists who can now receive hints on the person in front of them. This will lower the risk of potential fails during the interviews.
The OCTOPUS project will benefit from the FLAME infrastructure thanks to multiple FLAME patterns that will be tested and benchmarked such as the offloading (e.g. from the face recognition) the content store process and others.
Within the OCTOPUS project, many experiments will be scheduled on the infrastructure of Buseto Palizzolo (Sicily) in collaboration with the local municipality and the community in order to test the OCTOPUS technology and gather valuable measures.
The outcome of the project will be immediately and directly applied by Consulservice, that is an Italian regional broadcaster, to its internal journalistic and content production process.
End-user benefits
- Function offloading and less battery consumption for the user’s terminals
- Multimedia content placed very close to the user implies a safer control over GDPR policies
- Better support for the journalists who can now have out-of-band information in real time
Operator benefits
- Network cost reduction due to reduced geographical network usage (e.g. satellite link for remote sites)
- Resources are immediately available and dynamically balanced on the edge nodes thanks to the FLAME platform
