Basic information

Title: Massive Engagement of Media Producers for Highly Innovative Smart cities
Acronym: MEMPHIS
Company: MOG Technologies
Type:SME

Where: Barcelona
When (time-plan): November 2018 to May 2019

Scope / objective(s) of the trial

To test, in a real-world city infrastructure, the end-to-end latency, video resolution, video data rate and availability of the MEMPHIS ecosystem – a Cloud-based crowd streaming ecosystem with an application for citizen-based media production, a Cloud-based live switcher and a Cloud-based video mixing station that can be used by both citizens and media professionals to create added value live media (for video coverage of events or breaking news).

General workflow of the MEMPHIS experiment
Media architecture of the MEMPHIS ecosystem

Summary of methodology

  • Phase 1: Application deployment and content production for pre-testing in controlled environment – a set of pre-tests undertaken at MOG Technologies’ premises, in which the MEMPHIS architecture was tested using a private Cloud;
  • Phase 2: Pre-testing in a controlled virtual city infrastructure (a.k.a. sandpit) – a set of pre-tests undertaken at MOG’s premises, in which the MEMPHIS ecosystem was tested using FLAME’s sandpit;
  • Phase 3: Pre-testing and testing in a real-world city infrastructure – a set of pre-tests and a live trial implemented in Barcelona, on May 7, 2019, consisting of a street interview to Johann Wald (from Primavera Sound Radio) captured using smartphones to be streamed in Portuguese television (Canal 180), using the MEMPHIS ecosystem and the FLAME platform.

Results (for completed trials):

  • R1: General workflow defined for the MEMPHIS experiment;
  • R2: Conceptual architecture defined for the MEMPHIS ecosystem;
  • R3: MEMPHIS ecosystem successfully implemented and tested in a controlled environment;
  • R4: MEMPHIS ecosystem successfully implemented and tested in a controlled virtual city infrastructure;
  • R5: MEMPHIS ecosystem implemented and tested in a real-world city infrastructure demonstrating the existence of issues in the infrastructure (e.g. network problems with observation of high packet drops, segmentation fault on FLIPS) that can be solved in order to improve the FLAME platform.
